âONE MOMENT IF you please,â called a voice from within a doorway.
Mr. Darcy was standing in the foyer of a boarding house in a sordid part of London.
âIf youâll have a gander at the list of prices there. Paymentâs upfront for any of the girls, and soââ Mrs. Younge appeared in the doorway, and at the sight of him, her voice cut off. âMr. Darcy.â
âMrs. Younge,â he said, clasping his hands together.
âOh, I suppose youâre not here forâ¦â
âNo,â he said. âAnd I suppose this isnât really a boarding house.â
She sighed. âWell, not a lot of options for a woman turned out with no reference, itâs true. Iâm doing the best I can.â
He looked her over. âI want you to go back to what you were trying to say the day I sacked you.â
âWhat, sir?â
âI cut you off and wouldnât let you speak, and I want to hear what it was now,â he said. Elizabethâs speech had moved him a bit, he supposed, because Mrs. Youngeâs options were quite limited.
âWell, it all seems foolish now, though.â
âDoes it?â
âI wanted to say Iâd have nothing to do with him from then on, and that I hadnât any real idea what he was about,â said Mrs. Younge. âShe seemed taken with him, and I told myself it was some kind of love story, I suppose. But then I saw it wasnât. I saw what he was. He frightens me. But he got me this position here, and heâs always coming round, and I have⦠I canât afford to cross him, you know? I donât want to be on the other side of his holding a grudge.â
Mr. Darcy felt something inside him twist. âSo, this is what I did to you, then, Mrs. Younge? Threw you to him, and heâs made you descend to this?â
She ducked down her chin. âI donât⦠Iâm not a whore, Mr. Darcy. Iâll leave before I do that. Iâve been thinking about leaving anyway. Perhaps on a ship to America, put an ocean between me and him. Heâs the devil. How he talked me into doing that to your sisterâ¦â Her eyes filled with tears. âIâm just so sorry.â
âDoes he talk to you?â said Mr. Darcy.
âWhat do you mean? Yes. Obviously, he talks to me.â
âDoes he share his plans with you?â
âOh.â She lifted a shoulder. âWell, not as such, Iâm afraid.â
âDo you think you could get him to?â
âI⦠without his figuring out what I was up to?â
âMaybe this is harsh, Mrs. Younge, but hereâs what I want to offer you. You find out what heâs planning to do to me, give me good information about his plans, and I shall bring you back into my household. I donât think you can be responsible for my sister ever again, but Iâll find something for you. She misses you, you know.â
Mrs. Youngeâs lips parted. âWhat brings this on? Is it that pretty girl in the unfashionable part of town, the one he said you were engaged to? I said, âMr. Darcy would never become engaged to a girl like that.
